Pregnant in School? We’re Here for You.

There is probably a lot running through your mind right now. From questioning how you will finish school to facing different reactions from family and friends, it is easy to feel stuck. Before those questions spiral out of control, take a breath and start with the facts.

Alpha House provides free, confidential services designed to meet you where you are. You do not have to make any decisions before you have accurate information.

Know Your Rights

If you are worried about being discriminated against because of your pregnancy, know that you have legal protections. Title IX is a federal civil rights law that protects pregnant and parenting students from harassment and discrimination at any school or university receiving federal funds.

Under Title IX, your school must:

  • Allow you to continue participating in classes and extracurricular activities
  • Provide reasonable adjustments because of your pregnancy (such as more frequent restroom trips)
  • Provide excused absences for pregnancy and childbirth
  • Not require a doctor’s note for hospitalization after childbirth unless it requires notes from all students hospitalized for physical or emotional conditions

When it comes to being pregnant in college, the law is on your side. No one has the right to mistreat you, and if you believe you are being discriminated against, speaking with your school’s Title IX coordinator is the right place to start.

Start with Confirmation

The first step is confirming whether you are actually pregnant. Home tests are not always reliable, especially if taken at the wrong time. We offer lab-quality urine pregnancy testing in a professional setting, with results reviewed during your appointment.

If your test is positive, a limited ultrasound performed by our registered nurse is the essential next step. It confirms how far along you are, where the pregnancy is located, and whether it is progressing, all details that affect your health and available options.

Only You Can Decide

Loved ones, such as your parents and friends, may share their opinions on your pregnancy and which option you should choose. Though they likely have good intentions, receiving constant feedback and advice can be emotionally draining.

Remember, only you, not your parents, friends, or even your partner, have the right to make a pregnancy decision. You may choose to work through your options with your partner, or you may need some space to process your feelings and decide what is right for you. Either way, that choice belongs to you.

Parenting, adoption, and abortion are all options available to you. Our staff provides factual, judgment-free information on all three so you can make an educated decision.

Support Beyond the Appointment

Students who choose to parent or continue their pregnancy can take advantage of our BrightCourse education program and mentor support. You will be paired with a dedicated mentor and can earn essentials as you complete classes.

We can also connect you with campus and community resources for housing, financial assistance, and more.
